News Release - Mayor Warren Urges Caution During Winter Storm Warning

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, January 12, 2018) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren is urging residents to be prepared for flooding, mixed precipitation, heavy snow and hazardous travel as Western New York will be under a Winter Storm Warning from 4 p.m. today to 4 p.m. tomorrow.

Rain, combined with snowmelt will continue to produce localized river, creek and ice jam flooding. Falling temperatures will bring a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow with slippery roads and limited visibilities. Heavy snow may cause difficult travel conditions.

“We are working hard preparing our staff and equipment as this cold front approaches and I am asking citizens to be prepared, particularly when it comes to this evening’s commute,” Mayor Warren said. “I am asking commuters to be patient and considerate and to leave themselves plenty of time to get to their destination. By working together we can get through this storm safely.”

Mayor Warren is asking residents to consider the following:
  • PlowTrax, the City’s online snow plow tracker application, is up and running so residents can check plowing progress in real time. Plows can do their job faster or more effectively if residents give them plenty of space.
  • Strictly observing alternate side parking regulations allows plows to clear streets more effectively.
  • Monitor the news for travel advisories, closures and cancellations.
  • Discuss weather related policies and procedures with your employer.
  • Keep the sidewalk clear in front of your property. The City provides sidewalk plowing during heavy snow but relies on residents to keep walks clear.
  • Keep fire hydrants clear of snow.
  • Bring pets inside.
  • Make sure your vehicle has enough gas.

Consider having a communication plan to check on for families and neighbors, especially the sick and elderly.

Shoveling or plowing snow from private property onto sidewalks or roads is illegal.
