City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, April 10, 2018) -- Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the City has been awarded a Coca-Cola/Keep America Beautiful Public Space Recycling Grant to enhance recycling collection at special events and festivals.

“The combination of this grant and the Mixed Recycling program that we launched in 2016 will keep even more materials out of the refuse stream and help us create a cleaner, greener more sustainable Rochester,” said Mayor Warren. “I want to thank Keep America Beautiful and the Coca Cola Company for this grant -- and for helping us Keep Rochester Beautiful. Protecting and preserving our environment for future generations enhances our goals of creating more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities for our citizens.”

“Coca-Cola has a long history of supporting community recycling programs in an effort to ensure that our packaging is recycled and reused,” said Bruce Karas, vice president of Sustainability, Coca-Cola North America. “Through partnerships like Keep America Beautiful and other recycling organizations, we are able to help make it easier for Rochester residents and visitors to recycle in public spaces.”

“To encourage people to recycle frequently, we need to make sure they have the proper bins available in as many locations as possible,” said Helen Lowman, president and CEO, Keep America Beautiful. “The support Coca-Cola has given us to continue with this grant program allows us to address this issue and create thousands of new opportunities for people to recycle in public areas across the country.”

Through the grant, the City of Rochester will receive 60 recycling containers to expand recycling into public event and festivals, including Party in the Park and the Summer Soul Festival. The City expects to collect more than 2 tons of additional recyclable materials in the first season as a result of the grant.

In 2016, the City enhanced its residential recycling program by launching Mixed Recycling, which provided residents large, covered, wheeled containers to make recycling more convenient, increase program participation and operational efficiency. The grant will contribute to the City’s green initiatives and goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020 and 40 percent by 2030.
