News Release - Rochester Designated as Employer of National Service

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, Oct. 19, 2018) – The City of Rochester has been designated an Employer of National Service in recognition of its longstanding relationship with alumni of the AmeriCorps and Peace Corps national service agencies and its commitment to fostering a diverse and highly-skilled workforce.

The designation will be reflected on the City’s job postings and job applications to indicate that “The City of Rochester is a designated Employer of National Service. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and national service alumni are encouraged to apply.”

“The City has already benefitted from the service of AmeriCorps members, and they have proven their value time and time again,” said Mayor Lovely A. Warren. “There are over 250 members in Rochester who are serving in our schools, R-Centers and nonprofit organizations, making a difference in our community every day. These are dedicated, qualified and mission-driven potential employees – and this designation makes it clear that I encourage all of our department heads to consider hiring applicants who have AmeriCorps or Peace Corps experience.”

The Flower City AmeriCorps program, operated in the Department of Recreation and Youth Services, has hosted 44 members who have completed at least one year of service since its launch in 2015. The members serve Rochester residents in libraries, neighborhood service centers, and youth and family programming sites. The program was renewed in October for another year of funding from New York State. National service alumni are currently employed by several City departments.

The City of Rochester joins more than 500 other workplaces across the country with this designation.
