Summer of Opportunity is the City’s employment program for city teens. Being enrolled in the program demonstrates the link of how a student’s personal success is connected with the world of work. The requirements for youth to be accepted into the program is enrollment in school, a minimum of 90% attendance and no long-term suspensions.

How the Program Works
- An employer lists a job by completing the Summer of Opportunity job order form and faxing it to the SOOP office at 428-6395.
- City staff will contact the employer to confirm the information and set up an interview schedule.
- City staff match eligible students to the job opening and refer them for an interview. (A minimum of two students are referred for each opening.)
- Interviews are conducted at the place of business and are scheduled mid-May through June.
- The employer is asked to notify the Summer Of Opportunity office of the hiring decision within two business days following the last interview.
- Students usually work for 6-8 weeks beginning in July and August. Students 14 and 15 will receive a stipend. Students 16 and over will receive minimum wage.
- It is possible to start a student earlier or for them to keep working longer.
- City staff are available to provide coaching support for the youth.
- Evaluations are completed by an employer on the youth worker and the program. Students also are asked to complete an evaluation form for their site.
