News Release - City Graphic Designer Wins State Award

City of Rochester

News Release

Paula Deacon, Senior Graphic Designer in the City’s Communications Bureau, has won an award in the Publication-Special Marketing category from the New York State Recreation and Parks Society.

Deacon, who has worked for the City of Rochester for nine years, won for her Sprouts Kids Gardening Club brochure. The same brochure was recognized by the Genesee Valley Recreation and Parks Society last fall, advancing it to the state competition.

Deacon said Stacey Estrich developed the Sprouts Kids Gardening program, and asked her to design a brochure and poster to promote the program.

“The inspiration for the cover of the brochure and the accompanying poster came from my little 4-year-old neighbor's rain boots (that looked like bugs),” Deacon said. “I asked my neighbors for items like watering cans, boots, and anything that I could use for images in the brochure. I brought those and other gardening items like rakes, shovels, seeds to City Hall so that Dave Mohney could photograph them for the brochure.”

Deacon says the brochure was a team effort and credits her colleagues, like Creative Director John Hawk, for helping her make minor tweaks to get it just right.

“I did not anticipate that the little brochure would be so well received. I had a great deal of fun managing the photography and doing the design,” Deacon said. “I was happy when Stacey was thrilled with the end result. For it to go on to win a regional and a state prize was more than I could ask for.”

The annual awards include more than 25 categories ranging from professional excellence to volunteer recognition.
