MAYOR DUFFY, CONGRESSWOMAN SLAUGHTER ANNOUNCE JEFFERSON AVENUE RESOURCE INFORMATION FAIR

(April 27, 2009) - Mayor Robert J. Duffy, in conjunction with Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter, is pleased to invite local residents from the city’s southwest and beyond to attend the Jefferson Avenue Revitalization Resource Information Fair on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Flint Street Recreation Center located at 271 Flint Street. The fair is part of the ongoing plan to revitalize Jefferson Avenue.

During the fair, attendees can connect with local assistance programs and community resources provided by the more than 20 community, non-profit, and government organizations that will be on hand.

The fair will showcase many programs and resources ranging from employment assistance, childcare help, and senior housing to business counseling, financial literacy training, education assistance and much more. Additionally, the fair will feature local entertainment, food, music, and fun activities for kids.

The fair is planned as part of the Jefferson Avenue Revitalization Plan titled, “A Bridge Between Hope & Action,” which was unveiled last month.

“This is another visible step in the very serious effort to revitalize Jefferson Avenue,” Mayor Duffy said. “This fair is just the beginning of many wonderful things planned to improve public safety and economic development and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.”

Mayor Duffy and Congresswoman Slaughter, in conjunction with County Legislator Willie Lightfoot, the Jefferson Avenue Business Association (JABA), Urban League of Rochester and other community stakeholders, initiated efforts last year to revitalize the Jefferson Avenue neighborhood located in the city’s southwest quadrant.

This plan includes recommendations that connect physical improvements to the neighborhood with capacity-building activities, such as the Resource Fair, to begin to address some of the root causes and conditions that affect neighborhood businesses and residents.
