News Release - Mayor Duffy Launches Extended Operation Cool Sweep

City of Rochester

News Release

(Aug. 13, 2009) - Mayor Robert J. Duffy will activate Cool Sweep operations tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 14; Saturday, Aug. 15; and Monday, Aug. 17 in anticipation of temperatures that are expected to meet or exceed 85 degrees.

Cool Sweep is a public-safety and customer-service program to help city residents who have limited opportunities to find relief from summer heat. A Cool Sweep operation is triggered when the forecast calls for a day to reach 85 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, Friday will be 85 degrees, Saturday will be 86 and Monday will be 87. The City does not operate Cool Sweep on Sundays.

“It appears that we are about to experience the first heat wave of the summer, which makes it even more important for people to pay attention to the weather because extended exposure to heat and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illness,” Mayor Duffy said. “I want to commend the men and women of the City departments who operate Cool Sweep for providing this valuable service to our customers.”
