News Release - Leading Optical Media Provider Spinergy Moves to Lyell Avenue

City of Rochester

News Release

(Monday, September 14, 2009) – Mayor Robert J. Duffy joined Mary and Gary Reeves and the City’s Commissioner of Neighborhood and Business Development R. Carlos Carballada to commemorate the grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for Spinergy, a leading provider in the optical media distribution industry.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony announced the addition of one of the largest duplication labs in the northeast into the city’s growing Lyell Avenue commercial corridor.  Spinergy is located in the 122-acre Canal Side Business Center, at 1555 Lyell Avenue (the former Valeo campus), occupying 79,000 square feet. The move brings 47 jobs to the city. The center is owned by Maguire Properties.

“The Maguires’ redevelopment of the old Valeo campus into a stunning, state-of-the-art business park is just one example of the revival Rochester is now beginning to experience, and Spinergy’s choice to locate here sets the tone for the shape of things to come,” said Mayor Duffy. “I would like to personally thank Mary and Gary Reeves for their investment and their belief in Rochester’s future.  I know that I speak on behalf of all of us in city government in saying that we look forward to having them as long-term partners in the revitalization of the city.”

With their background selling educational software services, Mary and Gary Reeves founded GR Associates in 1983.  The company was first established as a home-based business providing packaging products to software publishers nationwide.  Soon after known as Spinergy, the company ventured into assembly, warehousing and distribution services.  Spinergy now offers a wide range of services, including CD/DVD/USB duplication, manufacturing, content development, custom printing, packaging and related services to a national customer base, primarily in business-to-business markets.  In 2008, the company celebrated 25 years of providing high quality products and services to their customers.

The company’s decision to move to the city from its former location in East Rochester was driven by the need for ample square footage to expand their operations and the desire to relocate to an area easily accessible by one or more major highways for ease of shipping.  They then worked with Maguire Properties to design two skylight strips over the production area and install energy-efficient lighting in an effort to reduce energy costs.  The building layout also allows for more efficient use of space.

The City of Rochester provided a renovation grant of $30,000 and grant-to-loan assistance of $80,000 to the company.

“It was important for Spinergy to find a location that would meet our growing business needs and those of our customer base,” said Mary Reeves, president. “The new facility presented a great opportunity to expand our production capabilities and services while keeping our business based in Rochester.”
