(Monday, Feb. 1, 2010) – The City’s Winter Adventures program continues with a variety of activities scheduled for February and March. 

“Keeping active in the colder months not only helps maintain fitness and health but also helps to dispel the winter doldrums,” said Luis Burgos, Interim Commissioner of the City’s Department of Recreation and Youth Services. “For years our Flower City Looking Good Program has provided fair weather activities, now we’ve added a whole new component to keep Rochesterians up, active and outside in the cold weather months."

Be an “Earth Explorer” and learn to snowshoe Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Feb. 2 at the Edgerton Community Center, 41 Backus St. and Feb. 9 at the North St. Center, 700 North St. Snowshoes are also available for rental at the City Recreation Offices, 400 Dewey Ave. Call 428-6755 for rental information.

Join a field trip to Mendon Ponds Park on Tuesday, Feb. 16 and Wednesday, Feb. 17. Call 428-6755 to register by Feb. 6.

Test your fitness in the Fleet Feet, Snow Cheap Trail Race series, Feb. 3, 17 and March 3. Meet at the Lake Riley Lodge in Cobb’s Hill Park for post-race party, door prizes and fun. Register at www.fleetfeetrochester.com in the snow cheap series page.

Enjoy outdoor guided hikes on Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. On Feb. 6, meet at Lake Riley Lodge, Norris Dr. at Culver Rd. On Feb. 20, meet at Turning Point Park, Petten St. Parking lot (off Lake Ave). On March 6, meet at Seneca Park Zoo Parking lot.    

Enter the winter garden contest. Judging is based on use of colors, textures, structures and other winter plant characteristics. E-mail entries by Feb. 26 to thomasmi@cityofrochester.gov.

Join thousands of outdoor enthusiasts for the 26th Annual Lakeside Winter Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 14 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Ontario Beach Park. Taste Rochester’s best Chili at the Chilly Chili Challenge, plunge into Lake Ontario and help raise money for the Special Olympics at the 10th Annual Polar Plunge, take a horse drawn sleigh ride or enter the snow sculpture contest and enjoy a taste of the area’s best ice wines.

Don’t forget Manhattan Square and Genesee Valley Ice Rinks are both open through the end of March. Rental skates and lessons are available. Call the Valley at 428-7888 for information.

Finally, learn about how you can save money, energy and the planet at the “Climate Change Café,” held at the Lake Riley Lodge in Cobb’s Hill Park. All sessions are from 7 to 9 p.m. Session 1 will be held March 4 and will concentrate on indoor energy efficiency, lighting and insulation.  Session 2 will be held March 18 and will focus on ways to conserve and protect our water supply.  Session 3 will be held April 1 and will identify ways in which we can be environmentally friendly in the outdoors.
