News Release - City to Participate in International Coastal Cleanup for 18th Time on Sept. 25

(Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010) – The City, County, local businesses and community members will host for the 18th time locally the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 9 a.m. Volunteers will pick up litter along area streams and shorelines of the Genesee River and Lake Ontario.

Millions of people in over 100 countries around the world mobilize to remove litter from their shorelines. This is the 25th annual cleanup worldwide. The data is entered into a national database maintained by the American Littoral Society, Northeast Chapter, which can be found at: www.alsnyc.org.

Many volunteers are needed to help clean area shores. No registration is required. Sites are:

● Durand Eastman Beach - Jamie Romeo, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., parking lot A, next to public swimming entrance. Rain or shine.

● Ontario Beach Park- Dick Beebe, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., Ferry Terminal. 

● Buckland Creek - George Smith, captain. Rain date: 9/30.

● Braddock Bay - June Summers, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., Braddock Bay Marina, off E. Manitou Rd off NYS Parkway. 

● Irondequoit Bay - Jim Compitello, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., small parking lot/boat put-in on West side of Bay (South of the marina). 

● Greece Ponds - Paul Sawyko/Linda Evans, captains. Meet at 9 a.m., Greece Town DPW, 647 Long Pond Rd. 

● Hamlin Beach State Park - Martin Howden, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., Old Snack Bar in Area 4. Rain date: 9/26

● Webster Park - Margaret Leinberg, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., beach parking lot on Lake Rd. west of Holt Rd., west of the White House lodge. Rain date: 10/2.

● Oatka Creek - Maureen Leupold, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., park shelter off Union Street. Rain date: TBD.

● Payne Beach - Scott Copey, captain. Meet at 9 a.m., end of Lake Shore Drive.  

The International Coastal Cleanup is sponsored internationally by the Ocean Conservancy and throughout N.Y. State by the American Littoral Society. Locally, in the City and County, the event is a true community effort, organized and coordinated by dedicated individuals with the support from local business and town municipalities.
