Rochester, NY June 9, 2011 – On Wednesday, June 15, The Rochester Public Library kicks off its 100th year with a full day of programs and parties. Mayor Thomas S. Richards and County Executive Maggie Brooks, along with other special guests, will be on hand at 11:30 a.m. to unveil the new book “Rochester Public Library: 100 Years of Service 1911-2011.”

This decade by decade pictorial history of the library’s century of service from 1911 to 2011 contains over 250 photographs, many never before published. Then as a gift to our friends and fans we will ‘Turn Back the Clock’ to 1911 and if you return your overdue library books anytime this week, you’ll pay only 2 cents per day in fines, just like 1911! Come talk with our 100-year-old Librarian character about the early days of the RPL.

The day continues with a full schedule of programs:
Noon – 1 p.m.
The Jazz Starts Here free concert series Monday through Friday during the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, there is a free concert at the Central Library at Noon.

Noon – 3 p.m.
Rochester Public Library Post Office Station In the Library Store, purchase a special commemorative envelope with the newly released Jazz postage stamp and have it cancelled with the commemorative Centennial Celebration Station postmark. Rochester’s Postmaster will be here for this unique one day event.

4 – 8 p.m.
Books & BBQ Fundraiser
Before hitting the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival come hang out in the big tent at the Library’s distinctive Books & BBQ fundraiser, featuring great BBQ and more from downtown’s Stock Exchange Restaurant, Rochester-made Genesee and Dundee brews and live music from festival artists Trio Slaye! For the adventurous, there will be free guided-tours of the Aqueduct below the Library, and buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of four Nook e-readers!

Books & BBQ tickets are only $35 per person, available at the Library Store or by calling the Rundel Library Foundation’s Office at 428-8324. Proceeds benefit the Rochester Public Library’s books and materials budget, and its digital library initiative, the Project for the Future.
