(Wednesday, July 25, 2012) — Rochester is a top choice for families, according to a recent national report.

coolSweep0707081RY58Kiplinger Personal Finance ranked Rochester as the fifth best place for families in a recent report, noting student-teacher ratio, cost of living and affordable housing as perks to being a Rochesterian.

“We’ve always known that our city is a wonderful place to raise a family. The Rochester area speaks for itself. We strive to offer programming and services for families to keep young people engaged and parents entertained,” said Mayor Thomas S. Richards. “It’s no secret that our cultural and educational institutions are second to none, but we are excited to be recognized nationally for our commitment to families.”

Kiplinger weighed student-teacher ratio, cost of living and household income to determine rankings. The city’s ranking is part of Kiplinger’s Best Cities for Every Age 2012 report, which considered 361 U.S. metropolitan areas. Last year, the company rated the region No. 1 for commuters.

Despite noting some economic challenges, Kiplinger’s report focused on the city’s points of pride, such as its substantial park systemshiking and biking trails and affordable housing.

The report added that cultural institutions such as the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology are complemented by kid-friendly assets like the National Museum of Play at the Strong and the Rochester Museum and Science Center and its planetarium.

Rochester consistently ranks at or very near the top of many prestigious lists that help quantify the region’s outstanding quality of life. In recent years, the city has been named the No. 1 place to buy a home and the No. 3 best place to raise a family by Forbes.
