City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012) – Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada and Councilmember Loretta Scott joined owners Emmanuel Dokyi and Lula Lewis-Dokyi today for the grand opening of Mattie’s Restaurant and Bakery, 544 W. Main Street.

"I am very pleased to welcome a new restaurant to the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood, which will create a new amenity for the people who live and work here and attract people from outside the neighborhood,” said Commissioner Carballada. “We are making a lot of investment in this area, including the Voters Block Project and the Jefferson Avenue Focused Investment Strategy area, so the opening of a new small business like Mattie’s affirms those decisions.”

Mattie’s Restaurant and Bakery boasts an open air country décor with a touch of African flair. Mattie’s features multi-cultural and African dishes and baked goods. The main courses and sides include black-eyed peas delight, jollof rice with chicken or beef, Waakye (Rice and beans cooked together, with special beef or fish stew), grilled tilapia, French fried chicken wings with Mattie’s own special sauce, collard greens, smoked turkey, macaroni and cheese, pepper steak, pork chop, and Mattie’s own plantain muffins.

Mattie’s specialty baked goods encompass everything from pound cake, red velvet cake, sweet potato pie, apple pie, double chocolate walnut cake, bread pudding, peach cobbler, cream cheese pound cake, carrot cake to cheese cake and assorted cookies.

The partners invested $15,000 of their own funds to open Mattie’s, creating four jobs.

Mattie’s is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Saturday menu showcases African Cuisine.
