City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, June 5, 2012) –– Mayor Thomas S. Richards, City Council President Lovely A. Warren and Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada joined President and CEO Eugene Berardi Jr. today at the official grand opening of New York Trailways at 186 Cumberland St. in Downtown Rochester.

The grand opening marks the successful completion of Trailways’ move from the former Midtown Plaza, where it was the indoor mall’s first tenant in 1962. The bus company, which has changed names over the years, has operated in downtown since the mid 1920s.

“For the better part of the past century, this company has quietly woven itself into the fabric of Downtown, providing a vital service for our citizens and adding to the vibrancy of our Center City,” said Mayor Richards. “I am grateful that Trailways has been able to work with our Department of Neighborhood and Business Development to maintain this important presence in downtown Rochester.”

Jack Barker, Vice President and General Manager of New York Trailways said “we are pleased to be at this new location. Our customers have let us know how much they value this site with its convenient parking.”

The project consisted of the relocation of the Trailways bus terminal from Midtown Plaza, which has been acquired by the City for the Midtown Rising re-development project. The grand opening celebrates the completion of the interim terminal construction on the northern portion of the Cumberland Street site. Trailways will be located at this facility until it can relocate to a permanent facility at the proposed high-speed Amtrak Rail Station.

The City provided $1.4 for the relocation, which paid for the bus canopy, utilities and service equipment and installation, signage, site work and the parking lot.

New York Trailways is the agent for Greyhound. It is one of three affiliated Trailways companies owned by Mr. Berardi operating in upstate New York and Canada.

About 150,000 Trailways passengers arrive or depart through the Rochester station each year. Another 350,000 passengers travel through the station while en-route to other destinations. Forty jobs were retained in Downtown with the relocation.
