News Release - Mayor Thomas S. Richards Celebrates New Location for El Pilón Criollo

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, July 19, 2013) – Mayor Thomas S. Richards, City Department of Neighborhood & Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada and City Council President Lovely Warren joined with business owner Zury Brown and her family to celebrate the relocation of El Pilón Criollo with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 973 N. Clinton Avenue today.

El Pilón Criollo is a take-out restaurant that specializes in traditional Hispanic food such as rice and bean dishes, fried pork, baked chicken, fried chicken, stew, ribs and fritters.

“One of the great pleasures of being Mayor is coming out to meet with business owners like Zury Brown, who started as a small vendor at the Puerto Rican Festival, then opened a restaurant, and has now expanded her business with this beautiful new space,” said Mayor Richards. “We’re thankful for Ms. Brown’s commitment to Rochester and we wish her well in this new location.”

El Pilón Criollo is a family business run by Zury Brown and her three daughters, Zulma, Christina and Alejandra -- familiar faces in the Clinton Avenue neighborhood since the restaurant’s original location opened in 2008. The new, 1,300 square foot space offers easier access and more parking for her customers. El Pilón Criollo will continue to offer convenient take-out service and accommodate more catering orders for businesses and family gatherings.

El Pilón Criollo is the first new construction on North Clinton Avenue in more than 12 years. The section of North Clinton Avenue, commonly referred to as “La Avenida” or “the Avenue,” serves as the commercial corridor of the surrounding residential neighborhoods.

The total investment in the project is $285,870, including a City loan in the amount of $114,000.

El Pilón Criollo is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Orders for take-out and catering can be made by calling (585) 338-7930. For more information, including the menu, visit www.elpiloncriollo.com.
