News Release

(Monday, April 14, 2014) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren welcomes a special group of volunteers who are donating their time and skills to make free home repairs to residents in need during Flower City Work Camp.

The initiative kicked off this morning and runs through Wednesday, April 16. “On behalf of the citizens of Rochester, I welcome all of the Flower City Work Camp participants to Rochester,” said Mayor Warren. “We thank them for volunteering and making a difference in people’s lives.”

Flower City Work Camp is a faith-based organization comprised of more than 40 churches throughout Monroe County. In operation since 1989, hundreds of youth and adults come together every year during the week of Spring Recess to work on home improvement projects that homeowners are unable to make themselves. This year, more than 700 youth and 300 adults are participating in the camp, making repairs to more than 50 homes in the city. Each project is led by a “worksite leader,” who leads the youth in doing interior and exterior work such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, flooring, cleaning, drywall, demolition, replacing doors, cabinets, windows and more.

The City supports this activity by helping to select qualified homeowners for the program and by providing services such as smoke detector inspections and extra trash removal at the work sites.
