City of Rochester Department of Recreation and Youth Services Recognizes Volunteers

(Wednesday, October 29, 2014) - Deputy Mayor Leonard E. Redon and Department of Recreation and Youth Services Commissioner Marisol O. Ramos-Lopez extended their appreciation to volunteers who have assisted the Department of Recreation and Youth Services in the past year during the 15th annual Volunteer Recognition Reception at the Strong National Museum of Play on Tuesday, October 28.

Approximately 200 individuals were recognized for donating their time to assist with recreation programs, youth mentorship, public gardening initiatives, environmental efforts, special events, job readiness programs, Public Market stewardship and other department efforts.

“We are fortunate to have so many people who care about our community,” said Deputy Mayor Redon. “We want to publicly recognize and thank the individuals who give their time and talent to benefit our city.”

In addition to the recognition of volunteers, awards were presented to winners of the city’s 2014 Flower City Looking Good Garden Contest, a program which recognizes outstanding gardens throughout Rochester. “Our department strives to keep our city dynamic, sustainable and beautiful,” said Commissioner Ramos-Lopez. “From violence prevention to park stewardship, from teaching youth the value of excellence at our R-Centers to managing the Public Market, a lot of what we do would not be possible without the work of our dedicated volunteers.”

To become a volunteer, call the Department of Recreation and Youth Services at 428-6755 or visit the department offices at 400 Dewey Ave.

“R-Centers” are the City of Rochester’s fresh approach to recreation and community centers. R-Centers provide safe, accessible environments where youth and adults can take advantage of first-rate programs and facilities designed to promote healthy living, education, creativity, self-discovery and positive relationships.
