 (Wednesday, January 14, 2015) – The City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation will offer an array of activities and events this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Monday, January 19.

“The City’s MLK Jr. Day activities are a great way to add vitality to our community and contribute to creating safe and family friendly neighborhoods,” said Mayor Lovely Warren.

Youth ages 6 to 18 and their families are invited to enjoy special programming at the following R-Centers on Monday, January 19:

  • MLK Day Play and Lecture, Adams Street R-Center, 85 Adams St., 3 p.m. 
  • 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament, Avenue D R-Center, 200 Avenue D., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
  • MLK Jr. Essay and Reading Contest with prizes, Avenue D R-Center, 200 Avenue D., 2 to 4 p.m. 
  • MLK Jr. Internet Scavenger Hunt with prizes, Campbell Street R- Center, 524 Campbell St., 1 p.m. 
  • MLK Jr. Discussion at 11 a.m. with free lunch at 1 p.m. followed by a movie at 2 p.m. and a craft project commemorating MLK Jr. at 3:30 p.m., Edgerton R-Center, 41 Backus St. 
  • MLK Jr. Trivia and Foosball Tournament, Humboldt R-Center, 1045 Atlantic Ave., 1 to 3 p.m. 
  • MLK Jr. Trivia & Coloring Contest, South Avenue R-Center, 999 South Ave., 1 to 3 p.m. 
  • Hot Shots” Basketball Tournament and an “I Have a Dream” Craft Project, Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, 530 Webster Ave., 1 to 3 p.m. 
  • The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park Ice Rink will host “Skate to Commemorate” at 12 noon, 1:50 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. Periodically during each skate session, excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches will be played over the loudspeakers. Skate rentals are $3. Admission fee is $2 (can be substituted with a donation of two non-perishable new hygiene, cleaning, or household items). Rental skates limited. Youth Voice One Vision, a council of youth working to improve Rochester, will be selling hot chocolate at all three sessions.

The following R-Centers will be open extended hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, January 19: Adams Street, Avenue D, Campbell Street, Carter Street, David F.
