News Release - Youth Invited to Apply for City’s Summer of Opportunity Program and RochesterWorks! Summer Youth Employment Program

(Wednesday, February 11, 2015) – The City of Rochester and RochesterWorks! invites youth between the ages of 14 and 20 to apply for the City’s Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) and the RochesterWorks! Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) work and career-exploration programs.

SOOP/SYEP provides job readiness training, career exploration and employment opportunities for youth who are enrolled in middle school, high school or actively pursuing their high school equivalency diploma. Youth who participate in SOOP learn real-world skills that make them more attractive to employers and more successful in school.

Interested youth may apply online for both programs through Friday, March 13. In addition to the online application, youth must submit copies of their Social Security card, work permit, a recent report card, photo ID and the printed application must be signed by a parent and school counselor. Supporting documents will be accepted at RochesterWorks!, 255 N. Goodman St. at the following times and dates:

• 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 25;
• 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 26;
• 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 27;
• 10 to 2 p.m., Saturday March 28

Following completion of program requirements, youth will have the opportunity to interview for paid summer jobs for a duration of six to eight weeks. Past employers have included: the City of Rochester, community based organizations, colleges and local businesses. Selection for this program is competitive and not every applicant is guaranteed a job. Successful applicants will be placed in career support programs where they will receive additional training as part of their summer employment.
