News Release - City GIS Project Receives Award

City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, July 23, 2015) – The City of Rochester was honored with a Special Achievement in Geographic Information Systems (SAG) Award yesterday at the 2015 Esri International User Conference in San Diego, Calif. for its exceptional application of geospatial technology. The award acknowledges vision, leadership, hard work and innovative use of Esri's geographic information system (GIS) technology.

“We have an outstanding team putting together the City’s GIS applications,” said Mayor Lovely A. Warren. “Our GIS applications increase governmental transparency by providing a wide array of easy-to-find and easy-to-read information. GIS also helps us achieve our goals of safer, more vibrant neighborhoods, more job opportunities and better educational opportunities by providing our residents and customers with pertinent information in a visual format.”

The City uses Esri ArcGIS technology to enhance the display of property information, locate City services, City Council districts, Neighborhood Service Center areas, parks and recreation centers, libraries and even the names of local police captains. The City uses GIS for various other internal applications including a system for Forestry and public notifications. The City plans to explore other opportunities for the deployment of additional GIS enabled applications for public use.

“The SAG Awards identify the organizations and people who are using the power of geography to make our world a better place,” says Esri president Jack Dangermond. “At Esri, we are always deeply inspired by the passion and innovation of our users. They deserve recognition for their invaluable contributions to their communities and the continued evolution of geographic science.”
