City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced a new partnership between the City of Rochester R-Centers and the Rochester Broadway Theatre League to allow participants in the R-Centers’ “Hip Hop 101” program to attend a touring Broadway performance of “Motown” for free.

“I’d like to thank the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for offering this excellent opportunity for youth to learn about the history behind the music they enjoy while being exposed to the joys of top-quality theater,” said Mayor Warren. “Enriching partnerships like this help us achieve our mission to bring quality education to our youth which in the long run helps with our other goals of creating more jobs and safer, more vibrant neighborhoods.

The Hip Hop 101 program, located at the David F. Gantt R-Center, teaches youth about rap and hip hop’s roots in earlier music such as Motown and jazz through music appreciation workshops and projects. The program seeks to expose youth to the historical, social and artistic issues behind the music they enjoy today.
