 News Release

(Wednesday, July 12, 2017) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren today joined City Council President Loretta Scott, Council Vice President Dana Miller, City Councilmembers Michael Patterson, Jackie Ortiz and Elaine Spaull and New York State Senator Joseph Robach at a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the City’s, $8.5 million improvement project at the City of Rochester Public Market.

“Our Public Market has been a center of commerce and culture in our community for 112 years,” said Mayor Warren. “It is one of the most dynamic and celebrated public markets in the nation and the completion of this ambitious project ensures it will remain a Rochester tradition for generations to come. Investments like this greatly improves our quality of life, supports local businesses and creates jobs, which ultimately leads to safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities for our citizens.”

The City and project partners designed and built a new outdoor shed, a state-of-the-art indoor shed, and four new food stand structures to provide better amenities and more opportunities for Market vendors and customers.

The new outdoor “D” Shed is a replica of an original shed built in 1904-1905 and demolished in 1963. The new shed creates 46 additional vending spots.

The new, indoor “B” Shed replaces a 1977 structure built to house farmers in winter. The new 13,000 square-foot building provides vastly improved amenities and comfort for vendors and customers. The shed is naturally lit via a fully glass front and complemented by high efficiency LED lighting. The front also features large garage door-style bay doors that allow a more open-air feel in spring and summer. The new indoor shed also employs state-of-the-art climate controls and includes large, new restroom facilities for the entire Market. The new indoor “B” Shed will open for business on Saturday, July 15.

Four individual food stands on the Market grounds were replaced with custom-fabricated repurposed shipping containers. These containers have been creatively used worldwide as efficient modular building units.

Funding for the project was provided by the City of Rochester, Empire State Development Corporation, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the New York State Dormitory Authority. Additional public funding was also secured by State Assemblyman David Gantt.

“By supporting the Rochester Public Market, we are helping New York’s farmers connect with new consumers while also increasing access to fresh, local produce for our communities through SNAP and through the State’s FreshConnect Checks program,” said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. “We congratulate the Rochester Public Market on this incredible milestone and look forward to our continued partnership in serving New Yorkers.”

The Market is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays year-round and another 47 days per year for free-admission special events.
