News Release - Emergency Communications Director Selected for National Award

(Tuesday, August 1, 2017) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that John M. Merklinger, Director of the Rochester Emergency Communications Department was awarded the Egon Bittner Award at the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), Inc. summer conference in Rhode Island. The Egon Bittner Award is presented to Chief Executive Officers who have commanded a CALEA Accredited agency for fifteen or more continuous years.

Merklinger is the first Emergency Communications Center Director to receive the award.

The 911 Center has been accredited by the New York State Sheriffs' Association (NYSSA) since 2006.

“John Merklinger’s hard work and continuous effort to ensure the security of our citizens and overall dedication to providing safer and more vibrant neighborhoods is evident through his remarkable leadership,” said Mayor Warren. “We recognize and commend his significant contribution to the City of Rochester.”

The award was created to recognize leaders for their significant contributions to the public safety profession and to CALEA. CALEA has presented the award to 54 CEOs of law enforcement agencies since its inception in 2004.
