News Release - Statement from Mayor Lovely Warren on Hurricane Harvey

City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, August 30, 2017) -- My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Texas, whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey. It was just a few short years ago that New York City was hit by Superstorm Sandy, and even in Rochester we felt the impact of the devastation Downstate.

I would like to recognize the first responders and public officials in Texas who have selflessly risked and, in some cases, given their lives to help Texans in need.

The City of Rochester stands ready to help, should the request come from the federal government. The uptick in severe weather events is further proof that no city is immune from catastrophe. The City of Rochester routinely works with our partners in government to update and practice our emergency response protocol, and I urge Rochester families to take an opportunity to have an emergency plan in place. Lastly, I urge our citizens to exercise caution when making financial donations to the victims of Harvey, so they can ensure their dollars make it to the victims. Please see the following article which details how to donate, and how to avoid scams. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/28/us/donate-harvey-charities-scams.html?mcubz=1
