Lakeside Winter Celebration



Celebrate the Winter at the 30th annual Lakeside Winter Celebration at Ontario Beach Park, Saturday Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9 2014

This year, the celebration has been expanded to two days and will feature activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, February 8 and then continue on Sunday, February 9 with the “Polar Plunge” at noon followed by a Port and Turning Point Hike at 1 p.m. Additionally, Charlotte area merchants will be offering specials and discounts all weekend, Friday through Sunday. Go to www.portofcharlotteny.com to download discount coupon.  All events will be held at the Port of Rochester Terminal and Ontario Beach Park.

The event, which is part of the city's annual Flower City Looking Good--Winter Adventures program, event is organized by the all-volunteer Ontario Beach Park Program Committee and sponsored by the City of Rochester, Monroe County, Harbortown Merchants Association , City Newspaper and Wegmans.

This Year's Activities

Saturday, February 8th, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Rec on the Move
The City Recreation Bureau’s Rec on the Move mobile recreation center will be on-site, packed with a variety of wintertime fun activities for kids and families. These include free snowshoe lessons, nerf snow bowling, hockey shooting and more.

Lake Ontario Wine Festival
The festival will feature a variety of wines from throughout New York State that festival goers can sample for a fee. This year area microbreweries will join the wineries. Wine will also be available by the bottle for purchase. In addition, New York farmers will be selling a variety of maple syrup, cider, jams and winter produce. 

Chilly Chili Challenge
From noon to 3 p.m. both professional and amateur chefs will vie for the coveted title of “Best Chili in Rochester.” You and your taste buds can be the judge.

Snow Sculpture Contest
This year’s Snow Sculpture contest will again let the snow artist in you compete for cash prizes in three categories. The theme this year for snow sculptures is “Famous Buildings.” Registration is from 8 a.m. till 11 a.m. You can get an early start on your masterpiece by calling 428-6135 on Friday, February 7 to pre-register. 

Other activities will include a dogsled demonstration, snowshoe demonstrations and lessons, free horse-drawn sleigh or wagon rides and games for children. Also, enjoy the country sound of local performer George Hogan and his band.

On Sunday, February 9 the festivities continue with:

14th Annual Polar Plunge (Fundraiser) for the Special Olympics
The 14th Annual Polar Plunge kicks off the celebration at Noon. when more than 1,000 winter enthusiasts are anticipated to dive into the icy waters of Lake Ontario to help raise funds for the New York Special Olympics. As usual the event includes a highly competitive and always crowd-pleasing costume contest. Perennially this event was the most successful Special Olympics fundraiser in New York State. Due to construction related to the Marina project the access to the parking lots at the Port/Beach has changed.  Proceed north on Lake Ave to Corrigan Street.  Turn right on Corrigan Street (just before the Marina Restaurant).   Proceed about 300 feet. Turn Left into the first parking lot and follow directional signs .
