Community Risk Reduction

The purpose of the Rochester Fire Department Community Risk Reduction initiative is to facilitate all public education  and fire prevention activities. This includes working with public and private organizations, community groups, schools, churches, businesses, festival organizers, and all Rochester residents requesting information on fire safety.  Community Risk Reduction involves presentations, sharing literature, interactive teaching, and all other activities involving fire safety education. >

Fire Safety Presentations

The Rochester Fire Department is committed to doing all it can to keep our community safe. This means more than just responding to emergencies. It also means preventing emergencies as often as possible. Therefore, our Community Risk Reduction staff offers fire safety presentations that can be tailored to you community group or organization. Presentation topics include: cooking safety, home safety for children, smoke and carbon monoxide detector installation, Exit Drills In The Home, emergency preparedness, and more.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate all requests due to staffing considerations. Non-profit groups serving the City of Rochester and hosting meetings or events with more than 25 people will be given first priority. Please also be aware that our presence may be limited during peak times of the year when our first priority must be  emergency response. Please allow three weeks notice.

For Fire Safety Presentation requests, send an email request to fireweb.cityofrochester.gov .

Open Houses

In an effort to create a stronger bond between the Fire Department and the community, the Fire Chief continues to sponsor an open house program at neighborhood fire stations. It is his hope that through this program the Fire Department will educate the community about safety, health and wellness, and career exploration. Each open house, the Fire Department teams up with local health organizations to provide glucose testing, blood pressure checks, and information about nutrition, anti-drug initiatives, and other information relevant to the community. the open houses are sponsored by Tops Friendly Markets, who supplies a variety of refreshments to all who attend. Through this program, hundreds of residents have taken advantage of the opportunity to meet their local firefighters.

Check the City's event calendar to find out when and where the next open house will be held in your community.

Fire Safety House

The Safety House, purchased and donated to the City by Wegmans Food Markets, is a mobile classroom with child sized rooms featuring real life "safety hazards" that allow students to safely experience the sights, sounds, and dangers associated with fire in the home. It has been used at numerous schools, churches, festival sites, shopping areas, and other community venues to teach children and adults fire safety and prevention.
