News Release ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition to Hold Virtual Town Hall June 24

City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, June 17, 2020) -- Mayor Lovely A. Warren and City Council Vice President Willie Lightfoot are inviting the public to participate in the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition virtual Town Hall at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2020 via Zoom.

“We must end the culture of violence that leads far too many people in our city to settle disputes with a gun,” said Mayor Warren. “We cannot legislate morality, but we can bring the community together with one united voice to say, ‘enough is enough’ – and that’s what this forum will help us do. I am grateful to the members of Roc Against Gun Violence Coalition for bringing much needed attention to the issue of gun violence.”

“Ending gun violence is my number one priority as the chair of the Public Safety, Youth and Recreation Committee,” said City Council Vice President Lightfoot. “This virtual Town Hall will help us develop new strategies to educate our youth and community about the lasting impacts of gun violence, advocate for new laws and policies that make our community safer, and eradicate gun violence from our neighborhoods.”

The RAGVC seeks to end gun violence in Rochester by bringing attention to the causes and effects of gun violence and promoting quality of life in Rochester's neighborhoods. The Coalition is made up of community partners and stakeholders who are already working to end gun violence using three unified tools: to educate, advocate and eradicate.

The Town Hall will be conducted online via Zoom. City Council Vice President Lightfoot will moderate.

The panelists are: Monroe County Legislator Sabrina LaMar, project coordinator for the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Community Engagement to Reduce Victimization (CERV); Rochester Police Chief La’Ron Singletary; Wanda Ridgeway, executive director of Rise Up Rochester; Sirena Cotton, founder of ROC the Peace; and Ray Mayoliz, coordinator of the City’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative.
