Description: | New research has painted a fuller picture of the life of Emily Sibley Watson (1855-1945). She is best known as the founder of the Memorial Art Gallery and Hochstein School. However, her philanthropic outreach extended more broadly than previously known. Mrs. Watson's large inheritance allowed her to support institutions and individuals, establishing her as one of the first local women to chart the course of her own independent fortune.

Margie Searl retired as Memorial Art Gallery (MAG)'s chief curator in 2013, after more than 25 years of service. At MAG, she was responsible for the permanent collection, organized exhibitions, and lectured extensively about MAG's art and history. With Lu Harper, she has been researching the life of the founder of MAG, Emily Sibley Watson, and the history of the Sibley and Watson families in Rochester.
