News Release – Mayor Breaks Ground on Aqueduct District Street Improvements

City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, April 25, 2023) – Mayor Malik D. Evans was joined by City leaders, State representatives, local stakeholders and the construction and engineering firms that will make the Aqueduct District Street Improvements a reality at a groundbreaking ceremony today. The Aqueduct District is being transformed into a pedestrian-friendly area while maintaining access for vehicles. The improvements are a part of the ROC the Riverway initiative and the overall Aqueduct Reimagined and Riverfront Promenades vision.

“In the 1800s, the Aqueduct District, formerly the site of Child’s Basin, was the busiest point along the Erie Canal within Rochester,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “Improvements to the district will amplify the vibrancy being generated once again in this city; I’m grateful to Governor Hochul for funding this project and making so much of the development along the Genesee River and in our Downtown a priority.”

The project includes Aqueduct Street, Bank Place, Basin Street, Graves Street and Race Street and will include new sidewalks, lighting, signage, and other reconstruction and streetscape improvements. Aqueduct Street will serve as a primary thoroughfare of the district and will be clad with stone pavers to celebrate the historic nature of the site.

Redevelopment should be complete by the fall of 2023; for updates on this project or other City construction projects, go to www.cityofrochester.gov/streetbeat for more information.
