News Release - Tango Café Dance Studio Expands in South Wedge

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, October 16, 2009) - The City’s Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada officially welcomed a new business venture to the South Wedge neighborhood today. Commissioner Carballada joined owners Ruben Fuentes and Kerri Vaughn for the grand opening of the Tango Café. The new café, located at 389 Gregory Street, is uniquely combined with the Tango dance studio. The Tango Café Dance Studio now offers a friendly, welcoming place for people to relax, enjoy coffee and meet new friends.

“This is a great add-on to this business,” said Carballada. “This café will provide a fun and supportive community atmosphere. We are pleased that Ms. Vaughn and Mr. Fuentes are growing their business in Rochester.”

Building owner John Trickey worked painstakingly to refurbish the facility, refinishing the dance floors to their original condition and installing a modern sound system. Aesthetic improvements include copper countertops and colors to compliment the beautiful, all-original exposed brick and the wood floors. Fuentes and Vaughn added the final interior decorations. “The building is an historical gem,” said Vaughn. “People have been dancing in this location since 1885."

Fuentes and Vaughn invested approximately $15,000 in for the improvements. They plan to work with the City Neighborhood and Business Development Department on grant opportunities. The pair has added a dance instructor and two café workers to their staff and plan to hire an additional café worker within the next three months.

“Tango Café is just another example of the creativity and resourcefulness of our great citizens and small business owners,” said Carballada. “This is a welcome addition to the distinctive South Wedge area. Tango Café not only provides a tangible service, they are bringing people together as a community. We wish them much success.”
