News Release - Mayor Warren Urges Citizens to Remember Fight for Freedom Over Presidents Day Weekend

City of Rochester

News Release

Statement from Mayor Lovely A. Warren Regarding Birthday Observations of Presidents and Reformers

(Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016) – This Presidents Day weekend includes the birthday observations of four great Americans who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of freedom: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. We are fortunate here in Rochester to have such a powerful connection to Anthony and Douglass. Their legacies continue to influence our city’s drive to secure social justice and equal rights for all.

I ask our citizens to take a moment this weekend to give thanks for their freedoms and remember those who fought so hard to help us obtain them. I also ask that we all remember those among us who are not truly free from the bonds of poverty, discrimination and an inadequate education system, which deny them their God given right to reach their full potential. Join me as we continue the fight waged by Washington, Lincoln, Douglass and Anthony until all of our citizens are truly free.
