What Happened?

At about 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, the City of Rochester Bureau of Water discovered a dead body within the Highland Park Reservoir. Immediately upon discovery, the Reservoir was shut down. Out of an over-abundance of caution, as we continue to gather more information, the Monroe County Department of Health ordered the City to issue a Boil Water Notice for the areas surrounding the Reservoir.

The Reservoir is inspected daily, and water quality is monitored continuously. At this time all water quality tests indicate that the water is safe. Bacteria samples are collected daily. All samples tested this morning indicate water quality was not compromised.

Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.  But these symptoms are not just caused by microbes in drinking water.  If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you should seek medical advice.

What is being done?

Multiple samples over the next 16 hours will be collected from the distribution system in the affected area in accordance with state and county requirements to confirm that water quality has not been impacted. The Reservoir has been isolated from the system. The Reservoir will not be put back in service until it has been drained and cleaned.
