Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2009

Rochester is celebrating National Hispanic Heritiage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, 2009.

Mayor Robert J. Duffy will presided at a City Hall ceremony today to mark the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month in Rochester. The ceremony will be take place at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Atrium.

Mayor Duffy read a proclamation declaring Rochester’s recognition of Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. After the reading, City workers reveal the 23 national flags of Latin America, which were unfurled from the mezzanine overlooking the City Hall Atrium.

“Rochester is blessed to be home to such a strong and vibrant Hispanic population whose contributions continue to play a vital role in this region’s growth and success,” Mayor Duffy said. “I encourage all of our citizens to take an opportunity during National Hispanic Heritage month to reflect on the richness of Latino traditions and culture and recognize their profound impact on our entire community.”

Also during this month of celebration, historic photographs and works of art depicting the contributions of Rochester’s Hispanic community are on exhibit in the City Hall Link Gallery and Visitors’ Lobby. Rochester-area youth who submitted some of the works were recognized at an award ceremony Sept. 24 in the Edgerton Community Center’s Stardust Ballroom, 41 Backus St.
