Acceptable use of technology resources
Provides guidance and definition around the appropriate use of technology resources, including City of Rochester Information Technology (IT) services and City information systems, by its authorized users to mitigate potential risks including malicious activity, compromise of City IT services and data, and legal issues.
Appropriate organizational use of technology resources and effective security require the participation and support of the City workforce, or “users,” of those IT services and City information systems.

City Email Use
City of Rochester information systems process tens of thousands of emails per day, and the City of Rochester Information Technology Department provides centrally managed services to internal users for the purpose of furthering the City’s mission.
Use of City of Rochester email services is subject to monitoring for performance and compliance purposes.

This policy establishes principles and provisions to support the security and management of City digital identities for all users in City information systems.

Use of Social Media by City Departments and Government Units
More people than ever are using social media technologies to create, connect, and collaborate online. The term social media is commonly associated with web applications that facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. The purpose of this policy is to:
- Encourage City government departments & government units to permit the responsible use of social media by its employees;
- Establish the minimum requirements for the use of social media in City of Rochester government; and
- Help make the City of Rochester government more accountable and transparent to citizens.

Authority to Establish City Wide Information Technology Policies & Standards
The purpose of this policy is to communicate the authority of the City of Rochester Information Technology Department to establish enterprise Information Technology (IT) plans, policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines as they relate to establishment, management, and support of City technology resources, services, City information systems, City data management, and City data security. Information technology policies, standards, and guidelines seek to:
- Promote innovation and deliver cost-effective IT solutions.
- Ensure adherence to the principles governing City Information Technology resources & City information systems.
- Ensure consistency in common technical standards for City Information Technology resources and City information systems.
- Protect and secure City Information Technology resources and data.
- Protect the privacy of City internal users, residents, businesses, employees, and other City stakeholders who have data stored on City technology resources.
- Streamline the delivery of information or services by promoting consistency in handling, collecting, transporting, transferring, and storing of data.
- Create value for City IT investments to better serve citizens, businesses, City departments, and those who use City services and data.
