City of Rochester
News Release
(Wednesday, May 30, 2018) – Durand Eastman Beach will
open for the summer season on June 24. The beach was closed for the season last
year due to flooding and erosion along Lake Ontario.
“Durand Eastman Beach is a gem in the city of Rochester,
giving families an opportunity to come together to enjoy the water and the
summer season,” Mayor Lovely Warren said. “The beach adds to our quality of
life here in Rochester, helping us create more jobs, safer and more vibrant
neighborhoods and better educational opportunities.”
When the beach is open lifeguards will be on duty from
noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week, until the beach closes on Sept. 3.
Durand Eastman Beach on Lake Ontario hosted over 145,000
visits in 2016. The beach, on Lakeshore Drive, is part of Durand Eastman Park.
The beach boasts 5,000 feet of Lake Ontario waterfront; and the park features
steep wooded slopes, valleys, scenic vistas, small lakes, spring flowering
trees and wildlife including swans, turkeys and fox; and spectacular fall
foliage colors.
Swimming is supervised by beach guards in a designated
area. All staff are trained in life
saving, first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
For daily beach conditions, call the Monroe County Beach
Hotline at (585) 753-5887. The hotline is updated each morning.
