 City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, April 1, 2011) – Recreation on the Move program coordinators Maria Thomas Fisher and Kevin Holman accepted an Exceptional Program Award for the City’s Bureau of Recreation from the New York State Parks and Recreation Society (NYSPRS). The award was given at the Society’s 71st annual conference and expo in Verona, NY on Tuesday. The NYSPRS promotes quality recreation and park facilities and programs for all New Yorkers through support of local, county, state and federal recreation and park-related organizations across the state.

“This award strengthens our belief that a mobile recreation center is beneficial to our community,” said Fisher. “When we watch children engaging with Rec on the Move in their neighborhoods, we can see how our programs and facilities are improving the health and lives of our youth.”

Recreation on the Move, launched in 2010, brings City recreation staff and resources right into city neighborhoods via a truck loaded with recreation supplies and equipment, healthy snacks and information about City Recreation Centers and other community resources. In 2010 and 2011, Recreation on the Move traveled to several neighborhoods and was featured at numerous community events, receiving more than 1,000 visits.
