City Water Bureau Project Awarded New York State American Water Works Project of the Year

The City Water Bureau’s South Clinton Avenue Water Supply Conduit Modernization Project (Project) received the New York State Section of the American Water Works Association (NYSAWWA) Medium Sized Project of the Year Award during New York’s Water Event held in Saratoga Springs on April 15th.

The NYSAWWA Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in management and administration within the water industry by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency/consultant/engineer/contractor working together to complete potable water projects.

The Project involved the replacement and rehabilitation of sections of two aged water transmission conduits that convey drinking water from the City’s Hemlock Filtration Plant to the City. Sections of these two conduits, located along South Clinton Avenue in the Town of Brighton, between the NYS Interstate 390/590 interchange and Brighton Henrietta Town Line Road, were installed between 1894 and 1979. Both conduits had experienced significant corrosion and therefore required rehabilitation or replacement. Sections of these conduits cross underneath the Erie Canal and the NYS Interstate 390/590 interchange. Along a portion of the project, a one-for-two pipe replacement with approximately 4,600 feet of 42-inch tape-wrapped steel water main, cathodically protected against corrosion, was installed to reduce construction costs, environmental disturbances and future operation and maintenance costs. In addition, a no-dig, cast-in-place pipeline rehabilitation technology was utilized to add structural integrity to the existing conduits, while minimizing construction costs and disturbances to critical transportation corridors.

The Project was a team effort, managed by the Water Bureau. Design and inspection was performed by Bergmann Associates and Villager Construction Inc. performed the construction, which was completed on-time and under budget during 2013 and 2014. Representatives of the Water Bureau, Bergmann Associates and Villager Construction Inc., were all present to receive this prestigious award.

Debbie Green awarded Utility Coordinating Committee Damage Prevention Council Award

Debbie Green of the City of Rochester Water Bureau was awarded the Utility Coordinating Committee Damage Prevention Council Award. As sometimes occurs within organizations, an active member holding a key position resigns, leaving a vacancy which must be filled immediately. In 2013, The UCC council Secretary resigned, rendering the council in need of an immediate replacement. Without hesitation, Debbie Green stepped in to fill this position. Without missing a beat, and in fact adding new beats, Debbie not only filled the Council Secretary position but also enhanced record keeping procedures. Debbie completed the remainder of the vacated term and has continued to serve since that time.

This award was presented at the Dig Safely New York's 2015 annual meeting, by Bill Van Dame, DES Permits Manager.
