News Release -- Expansion of Bike Boulevard Network Begins Tuesday on Pierpont Street

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, May 28, 2021) – Road construction crews will be on Pierpont Street Tuesday to begin the next phase of expanding the Priority Bicycle Boulevards network, moving the city closer to the goals of the City Bicycle Master Plan.

“Making it easier to ride bikes in our community will help us close the transportation gap and improve access to opportunity for our residents,” said Mayor Warren. “Rochester’s growing reputation as a bicycle friendly city has many benefits that support our efforts to create more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities for our citizens.”

Bicycle Boulevards are low-volume neighborhood streets that have been upgraded with traffic-calming devices to optimize bicycle and pedestrian safety and discourage non-local motorists from using them as shortcuts. They serve as suggested routes around high-traffic arterials that don’t have optimal levels of safe bicycle infrastructure.

The priority network provides the most critical connections in the overall plan for Bike Boulevards, with links to the Riverway Trail, Downtown, arterial bike lanes, and other major destinations.

On Tuesday, City contractors will start work on Pierpont Street to begin installing 20 additional miles of bicycle boulevards to more than 100 lane miles of bicycle infrastructure that is already present on Rochester’s road network. This project will help bridge the gaps between existing and planned bicycle lanes, cycle tracks and trails. The project includes the installation of traffic calming features, speed humps, wayfinding signage and pavement.

The Project includes the rehabilitation of Pierpont Street from Lexington Avenue to Driving Park Avenue; and resurfacing on Averill Avenue from Mt. Hope Avenue to Broadway; Aberdeen Street, both north and south; and Tryon Park. The project is expected to be complete by the end of the 2021 construction season.
