(Friday, July 18, 2014) – Mayor Lovely Warren announced that Cool Sweep operations will be in effect Monday, July 21 to provide residents with opportunities to get relief from the heat with cooling sprays from fire hydrants, extended hours at City pools, Durand Eastman Beach and spray parks.
Cool Sweep—presented by RG&E—is the City’s annual public safety and customer service program triggered when the forecast calls for temperatures to reach 85 degrees.
Cool Sweep operations take place at the following locations and times:
Hydrant Locations (noon to 4 p.m.):
• School No. 22 parking lot, 27 Zimbrich St.;
• School No. 41 parking lot, 279 W. Ridge Rd.;
• Roxie A. Sinkler Recreation Center, 75 Grover St.;
• Baden Park gateway, Vienna Street
Spray Parks (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.):
• Carter Street Community Center, 500 Carter St.;
• Edgerton Community Center, 41 Backus St.;
• Humboldt Community Center, 1045 Atlantic Ave.;
• David F. Gantt Community Center, 700 North St.;
• Thomas P. Ryan Community Center, 530 Webster Ave.;
Spray Features (not a full spray park) (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.):
• Fourth and Peck Playground, corner of Fourth and Peck Streets;
• MLK Park at Manhattan Square, 25 Manhattan Square Dr.;
• Troup Street Park, Troup and Van Auker Streets.
Swimming Opportunities:
• Adams Street Community Center Pool, 85 Adams St., noon to 9 p.m.
• Avenue D Community Center Pool, 200 Avenue D, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Durand Eastman Beach, 1000 Lakeshore Blvd. Lot A only, Lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Franklin High School (Monday – Friday only, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Use Kilmer Street entrance.
• Flint Street Community Center Pool, 271 Flint St., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Genesee Valley Park Pool, 131 Elmwood Ave., noon to 9 p.m.
• Northeast/Northwest Preparatory School at Frederick Douglas High School, 940 Fernwood Park. (Monday – Friday only, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
• Marshall High School Pool, 180 Ridgeway Ave (Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
• Monroe High School Pool, 164 Alexander St., (Monday – Friday only, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
• Joseph C. Wilson Foundation Academy, 200 Genesee St., (Monday – Friday only, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
