R-Centers Offer Winter Recess Fun

City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, February 11, 2015) – The City of Rochester invites city youth to get out of the house and take advantage of extended hours and expanded fun at several R-Centers during February Recess. City R-Centers offer first-rate facilities and structured activities so kids don’t have to spend school break on the couch. Indoor basketball courts, game rooms, fitness centers, pools, computer labs, educational programs and more provide everything necessary for a physically, mentally and socially stimulating school break.

The following R-Centers will be open extended hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, February 16 through Friday, February 20: Adams Street, Avenue D, Campbell Street, Carter Street, David F. Gantt, Edgerton, Flint Street, Humboldt, South Avenue and Thomas P. Ryan. All other R-Center school program sites will be closed for the week.

In addition to regular programming, the David F. Gantt R-Center, 700 North St., will be offering special February Recess programming:

• 9 a.m., Tuesday, February 17: Youth ages 14 to 17 are invited to compete in a 3–on-3 Basketball Tournament. Participants must register before 9 a.m.
• 12 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 18: Participants can enjoy Black Heritage Storytelling that celebrates our nation’s African-American cultural heritage. Open to all ages.
• 12 to 4 p.m., Friday, February 20: Youth ages 6 to 18 are invited to a roller skating party. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

R-Centers will also be offering the popular Biz Kid$ business education camp all week long. Biz Kid$ is a fun, interactive camp that teaches kids how to start their own business. Kids have a chance to earn money and real cash prizes while learning about business concepts, goal setting, public speaking, time management and financial literacy. Camp runs from 9 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and includes breakfast, lunch and business supplies. Information and applications are available online at www.cityofrochester.gov/bizkids.

All the fun is free to city residents with an R-Centers EZ Pass. EZ Passes can be obtained at any neighborhood R-Center or the City’s Department of Recreation and Youth Services office at 400 Dewey Avenue. EZ Pass registration forms may be downloaded at www.cityofrochester.gov/rcenters.
