News Release - Mayor launches Cool Sweep for Aug. 20

(Aug. 19, 2009) - Mayor Robert J. Duffy will activate Cool Sweep operations tomorrow Thursday, Aug. 20 in anticipation of temperatures that are expected to meet or exceed 85 degrees.

Cool Sweep is a public-safety and customer-service program to help city residents who have limited opportunities to find relief from summer heat. A Cool Sweep operation is triggered when the forecast calls for a day to reach 85 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, Thursday will be 85 degrees.

The operation employs the use of a cooling spray from fire hydrants and extended hours at City pools and Durand Eastman Beach. The use of City spray parks and pools in certain city high schools are also available to the public.

Cool Sweep Hydrants operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at these locations:
• School No. 22, 27 Zimbrich St.;
• School No. 41, 279 W. Ridge Road;
• Gardiner Recreation Center, 75 Grover St.;
• Edgerton Community Center parking lot, 41 Backus St.;
• Baden Park on Vienna Street.
Spray Parks operate from 10 a.m. to dusk at these locations:
• Carter Street Spray Park, 500 Carter St.;
• Manhattan Square Park (apparatus area only), 25 Manhattan Square Drive;
• North Street Spray Park, 700 North St.;
• Humboldt Center Spray Park, 1045 Atlantic Ave.;
• Fourth and Peck Playground Spray Park, corner of Fourth and Peck streets.

Swimming opportunities are available at:
• Genesee Valley Park Pool, 131 Elmwood Ave., 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (extended hours, normal fees apply);
• Durand Eastman Beach, 1000 Lakeshore Blvd. Lot A only, Lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to dusk (extended hours);
• Avenue D Community Center Pool, 200 Avenue D., 10 a.m. to dusk (extended hours);
• Flint Street Community Center Pool, 271 Flint St., 10 a.m. to dusk (extended dusk);
• Madison High School Pool, 200 Genesee St. (Dr. Samuel McCree Way entrance), 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday;
• Franklin High School Pool, 950 Norton St. (Entrance No. 12), 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday;
• Marshall High School Pool, 180 Ridgeway Ave. (Avis Street entrance),1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday;
• Frederick Douglass High School Pool, 940 Fernwood Park, (Tennis Court entrance) 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday;
