News Release

(Tuesday, April 2, 2013) Mayor Thomas S. Richards greeted and extended thanks today to a group of volunteers who are donating their time and skills to make free home repairs for residents in need during Flower City Work Camp. The initiative kicked off this morning and runs through Friday, April 5.

Flower City Work Camp is a faith-based organization comprised of more than 40 churches throughout Monroe County. In operation since 1989, hundreds of youth and adults come together every year during the week of Spring Recess to work on home improvement projects that homeowners are unable to make themselves. This year, more than 500 youth and 200 adults are participating in this year’s camp, making repairs to 59 homes in the city Each project is led by a “worksite leader,” a highly qualified skilled adult who leads the youth in doing interior and exterior work such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, flooring, cleaning, drywall, demolition, replacing doors, cabinets, windows and more.

Mayor Richards visited with a homeowner today on Masseth Street--one of the homes pre-selected for repairs--and met with worksite leaders and youth workers as they started work on the first day of camp. “It’s a wonderful thing to see so many volunteers committed to improving helping those in need and improving quality of life in the city.” said Mayor Richards. “On behalf of the citizens of Rochester, I welcome all of the Flower City Work Camp participants and thank them for the dedicated service in helping the less fortunate.”

The City supports this activity by helping to select qualified homeowners for the program and by providing services such as smoke detector inspections and extra trash removal at the work sites.
