Active Shooter Survival Tips

Run, Hide or Fight

The City of Houston, TX released a short video depicting a fictional shooting incident at an office building.  Entitled "Run-Hide-Fight, Surviving an Active Shooter Event," the video guides if you should ever find yourself in an unthinkable scenario: If a crazed gunman ever opened fire at your workplace. An office building is the most likely locale for a mass shooting, but these tips can also be used in other public forums as well.

These lifesaving tips include:

  • Run if a safe path is available. Always try to escape or evacuate, even if others insist on staying.
  • If you can't get out safely, find a place to hide.  When hiding, turn out lights, remember to lock doors and silence your ringer and vibrations on your cellphone.
  • As a last resort whether working together or alone, act with aggression, use improvised weapons and fight.
