Rochester Fire Department civil service exam applications now open
Applications are now open for the Rochester Fire Department civil service exam, which will be given on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Interested candidates must apply online at by Tuesday, May 27, 2025. All prospective Rochester Firefighters are required to participate in the civil service exam and those who score among the highest will be considered for the upcoming Fire Recruit class or other future opportunities.
“Our Rochester Firefighters are the first responders our community relies on in the face of fires, car accidents, medical emergencies, and many other critical situations. To those with the same commitment to service, I call you to apply to be part of this respected, hard-working team,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans.
“As a firefighter, the challenge ahead you is no match for the team beside you,” said Rochester Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano. “I’m incredibly proud of the men and women of our Fire Department. We’re seeking dedicated, driven, and collaborative individuals to step up and serve alongside them.”
In 2024, the Rochester Fire Department responded to approximately 37,450 requests for service, often arriving first on the scene. Firefighter salaries start at approximately $54,000 per year and can increase to $95,000 annually within a 5-year tenure. City Firefighters also receive competitive benefits including free healthcare and robust pension plan.
