Statement by Mayor Evans on the passing of School of the Arts student

"I was very sorry to learn about the tragedy involving a 15-year-old Rochester student yesterday. My heart goes out to her family and friends, and community members who were affected.

I encourage those who are struggling—or who know someone who is—to seek help from others. The free and confidential 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 with skilled counselors who can listen, understand, provide support, and share resources. Any city resident can dial 988 and request services from the City's Person In Crisis (PIC) Team.

The City of Rochester’s Department of Recreation and Human Services (DRHS) today provided counselors to meet with School of the Arts students who also take part in City programs and will continue this service on an as-needed basis. Professional, social emotional counselors from the Center for Youth are regularly available at R-Centers for any youth who would like to talk about mental health concerns. Parents and youth can contact any R-Center to be connected to support services during operating hours.

In addition, the City will host a forum for ages 12-21 on the topic of mental health and substance abuse at the School of the Arts, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. Registration information is forthcoming.

As a community, we must come together after tragic moments like this. This incident serves as a reminder to all of us to cherish each other and support each other through difficult times."
