How to Start a Block Club
Starting a Block Club can significantly enhance your neighborhood by fostering strong community bonds and increasing safety.
Block Clubs can help to create a support network where neighbors can collaborate on local projects, address common issues, and advocate for improvements. A block club also provides a unified group to work with local government and access resources, ultimately making your neighborhood a more connected, secure, and vibrant place to live.
Step one: Get organized
- Gather several of your neighbors.
- Depending on the size of the club, you may want to elect members.
- Identify projects or issues within the block (community garden, neighborhood outreach, robberies, loud noise, high grass, and weeds, etc.).
- Brainstorm some projects or solutions to the issues discussed.
- Consider how the club can be a resource for your block.
Step two: Take action
- Plan for the first meeting and establish an agenda.
- All meetings and activities should have an agenda or plan.
- Start small and prioritize.
- Activities like block walks, car washes, mini sweeps and meet and greets are a great way to bring together your block!
- Learn what works and what doesn't during your events to improve the future of the club!
- Design a colorful flyer or share an announcement on social media to promote the first meeting and get the word out.
- Use the meeting to start recruiting more members!
