The Sister Cities Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that connects the east and west sides of the Genesee River between Andrews Street and East Main Street in downtown Rochester, connecting the newly reconstructed Austin Steward Plaza (formerly Charles Carroll Plaza) on the west and Genesee Crossroads Park on the east.
In November 2024, renovations to the 50-year-old bridge were completed. The bridge improvements represent one phase of a larger project included in the City’s ROC the Riverway initiative. The Riverway Main to Andrews project, originally identified as a single project in the ROC the Riverway Vision Plan (2018).
- The Sister Cities phase of the project cost $6.6 million, including $5.2 million in Upstate Revitalization Initiative funds through ROC the Riverway and administered by the New York State Department of State.
- The Sister Cities Bridge renovation project includes an accessible flyover bridge to the newly renovated plaza to create a fully ADA accessible link across the Genesee River for bicycles and pedestrians; replacement of lighting, flagpoles, and railings; and structural repairs to the bridge.
- The flags and plaques on the bridge represent each of the Sister Cities around the world.
