City Hall's Link Gallery

Now Showing: In Plain Sight

Photographs and Writing by: Studio 678 – Photo Club 2023-24

In "People in the Community,” Studio 678 proudly presents a photojournalism project by ShyOn Covington, Sumayah Mohamed, Nekqo Ortiz-Billins, Aniyah Penn, Saniyah Penn, Xymani Howard, Emma Villalobos, Javiair Flores, and Arianna Bryant. The insightful portraits — captured by 29 young photographers —  express the experiences of young Rochesterians with the essence of our city and showcase its diverse faces and stories. Through this project, these budding photographers honed their artistic skills and discovered the power of connection and community.

Now in its twenty-sixth year, Studio 678 Photo Club is an after-school photography and writing program conducted by the Flower City Arts Center. Free to students, the club is funded by donations and grants. Photographers from the Flower City Arts Center provide instruction, partnering with local poets and advisors from the Rochester City School District.

Studio 678 puts professional 35 mm film cameras in the hands of middle school students, involving them in the entire creative process — from taking pictures to making their own black-and-white prints in a darkroom, to matting and framing their prints for exhibition. They also write poems or stories to accompany their images and create a collaborative book of their writing and photographs.

Using photography and writing, Studio 678 empowers youth to express their vision and voice, build life skills, connect with the community, apply school subjects practically, utilize teamwork skills, and develop mentoring relationships with their teachers and community volunteers.

Celebrating Rochester's Art at the City Hall Link Gallery

Established in 1981 by the New City Hall Citizens Committee, the Link Gallery provides a dynamic exhibition space for artists and craftspeople from the greater Rochester area. Featuring works from painters, printmakers, photographers, papermakers, and weavers, the gallery encourages local artists and groups from non-profits, institutions, and schools to showcase their creativity, bringing together the vibrant art and culture of our region.

With the understanding that Rochester is a city of and for the arts, the City of Rochester cherishes the visual arts, recognizing them as vital to our community’s education and culture.

The Link Gallery located on the first floor of City Hall at 30 Church St., is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and the gallery is handicapped accessible.
