City Cool Sweep operation expands to include Rochester Community Sports Center as cooling site

In response to high temperatures, Mayor Malik D. Evans announced today that the City will expand the Cool Sweep operation in effect Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21 to include the Rochester Community Sports Center.

City R-Centers, the Sports Center, some library branches, and spray parks and features will be open for extended hours so residents can remain safe and comfortable.

The Cool Sweep schedule for designated City facilities is as follows:

R-Centers and recreation facilities

9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. 

Students will be served lunches, dinners, and snacks.

Spray Parks

9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday through Friday

  • Carter Street R-Center, 500 Carter St.
  • Edgerton R-Center, 41 Backus St.
  • David F. Gantt R-Center, 700 North St.
  • Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, 530 Webster Ave.
  • Roxie Ann Sinkler R-Center, 75 Grover St.
  • Tyshaun Cauldwell R-Center for Hope, 524 Campbell St.
  • Humboldt R-Center, 1045 Atlantic Ave.
  •  Spray Features: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, 353 Court St. (at the play area)
  • Fourth and Peck Playground, Corner of Fourth and Peck Streets
  • Troup Street Park, Troup Street and Van Auker Street (between Reynolds Street and Ford Street)

Library Branches

During this Cool Sweep period, the Arnett and Winton and Lincoln, Branches will offer extended hours until 9 p.m. Thursday, June 20, and Friday June 21.

Residents are welcome to use the remaining branches as cooling centers during their regular business hours. All libraries will be closed Wednesday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. For more information click the button below.

Residents are reminded to take precautions during the hot weather to care for themselves and their families.

Tips on staying cool

During a heat advisory, the National Weather Service recommends residents observe the following precautions and preparations:

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”
