Mayor Evans announces investments in Rochester Animal Services

Mayor Malik D. Evans today announced the details of more than $2.6 million in capital investments in Rochester Animal Services (RAS) that are completed, in progress, and planned. 

Completed investments include: 

  • New community outreach vehicle and two animal transport vehicles;
  • New exterior lighting on building and parking lot;
  • Upgraded security system;
  • 15 new two-way radios;
  • New animal bathing tub;
  • New steam sterilizer;
  • New clinic cabinetry and access doors to surgery room and medical equipment;
  • New paint and privacy shades in the lobby—new countertops are coming;
  • Commercial dishwasher and washer and dryer; and
  • New furniture and carpet in office area.

In-progress investments include: 

  • Rehabilitation of windowsills;
  • New reception desk;
  • Maintenance to improve ventilation and airflow of HVAC system; and
  • Updated in-floor drains in each dog kennel, replacing current trough drains.

Future investments include:

  • Upgrading dog kennels;
  • Plumbing improvements in animal care areas;
  • New dog park on the city’s west side. 

Pet lovers can visit and adopt an adorable companion from 12 noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Sunday at Rochester Animal Services, 184 Verona St. 

Volunteer opportunities are available through the Verona Street Animal Society (VSAS), a non-profit partner that provides RAS with fundraising support and volunteer resources. Volunteer roles include animal care, fostering, community outreach, administrative support, and fundraising. Volunteers must be 18 or older and can apply on VSAS’s website at www.VSAS.org/volunteer.
